Since many Schools in the UK are now moving to online learning and our school here in the USA has decided to switch to Google Meet, I have had a few questions about how it works. Here is a quick guide to get you started.

Google Meet on a Laptop / PC

  • Go to meet.google.com in your web browser to start or open the lesson as instructed by your teacher
  • Before joining a meeting using Google Meet you will see the options to Mute and/or turn off your camera
  • When you are ready (usually a good idea to join the meeting on mute if it is a lesson) Click on Join now
  • The basic commands can be seen above

Changing the Screen Layout

  • To change the layout of your screen click on the More Options button in the bottom righthand corner
  • This will display the options menu
  • Whiteboard will open a drawing board all participants can edit (if given permission)

How to View more/less people on the screen

  • Change layout gives the option to see more than one participant at a time
    • Auto will allow Google Meet to decide
    • Tiled will display multiple participants on the screen (up to 49)
    • Spotlight will show only the active speaker (or shared screen)
    • Sidebar will show the active speaker with some of the other participants in a side bar
    • Tiles use the slider to change how many participants you can see at one time in the Tiled View
  • Full Screen will show only Google Meet on your laptop/PC
  • Turn on captions will display closed captions (subtitles)

Audio & Video Settings

  • Settings will allow you to setup or change your microphone, speaker and camera settings

Google Meet on a Tablet (iPhone/iPad)

  • When using Meet on a Tablet you do NOT have the option to display more than one participant at a time
  • To use Google Meet on a Tablet you will first need to download the Meet App
  • Click on the Meet App to start or open the lesson as instructed by your teacher
  • Before joining a meeting using Google Meet you will see the options to Mute and/or turn off your camera
  • When you are ready (usually a good idea to join the meeting on mute if it is a lesson) Click on Join
  • Use the buttons below to End Call, Turn on/off video, Mute/unmute microphone, more options
  • More options allows you to
    • Add others (if you have permission)
    • In-call messages (send text to other participants)
    • Share screen
    • Turn on captions
    • Report a problem
    • Settings – Adjust video for low light option

Audio & Video Settings

  • Audio and Video settings on the Meet App are accessed at the top of the screen
  • Show call participants
  • Switch between Front and Rear camera (Camera must be turned on)
  • Switch between available speakers and headphones
